Candlelight Vigil Marks 'Behind The Orange Curtain's' Final Showing

Parents who have lost their children to a prescription drug overdose honor them at Big Newport Theater.

It takes just a second to connect yourself to someone who has lost a loved one to an overdose from prescription pills. On the final day of the Newport Beach Film Festival, the victims of the epidemic were remembered during a candelight vigil. Behind the Orange Curtain -- a documentary exposing the growing epidemic of youth abusing deadly prescription medications -- had its final viewing Thursday to a sold-out crowd. A candlelight vigil was held on the lawn outside Big Newport Theater just before the film started. Parents brought photos of the children they have lost and placed them on the grass. The candles were lit in remembrance by parents, friends and family members to honor the lost lives. "The important message of Behind the Orange …

Opinion: A Peek Inside the New Port Theater

Filmgoers get a look as the theater as it opens briefly for the Newport Beach Film Festival.

The mystery behind the new Port Theater in Corona del Mar was finally revealed over the weekend, when its doors opened to a limited number of guests who enjoyed a filmmaker seminar as part of the Newport Beach Film Festival.  I had been dying to see the unveiling of this iconic theater, probably more than anyone else because I grew up on Carnation and Marguerite avenues and the Port is perfectly sandwiched between the two streets. My grandma and I walked to the Port and watched foreign films after my school days at Harbor View Elementary. Yes, they mostly screened foreign films, but they were good films nonetheless and a bag of popcorn made up for the hard to read subtitles. On Saturday the Port Theater showed off its fairytale makeover …

Cancer Patient Has 4 Months to Remove Boat

Newport Beach man asked to remove 72-foot boat from the side of his home as part of city ordinance.

Newport Beach reached a tentative settlement of its dispute with a cancer-stricken resident who has built a 72-foot boat in the side yard of his property, just before Monday's scheduled start of the trial on the city's nuisance suit, representatives of both sides said Friday. The dispute has dragged on for years as city officials have tried to get Dennis and Elizabeth Holland to remove the boat, the Shawnee, from his property. City officials say it violates an ordinance adopted in 2009 and filed a lawsuit against the Hollands in June. "I'm happy, I'm excited," Dennis Holland told City News Service. "It's a good thing, really. I have to take her all apart and then I have 120 days to do that. I can put it all back together behind the house …

Actors Thrilled to Be in Newport for Film Fest -- One Even Gives Nod to Clouds!

Opening night features the world premiere of "Jewtopia." Showings of "Behind the Orange Curtain," a film about teen prescription drug abuse in Orange County, are nearly sold out.

If you noticed a few extra stars in the sky Thursday night, it could have been the sparkling reflection from the red carpet at the 13th annual Newport Beach Film Festival.  The romantic comedy Jewtopia made its world premiere at the Big Newport Theater and its all-star cast walked the carpet for a crowd of enthusiastic reporters and flash-happy photographers.  In the movie, Tom Arnold -- a self-proclaimed film festival junkie -- plays gynecologist Bruce Daniels. Having made his rounds at Tribeca and Sundance, he thinks the Newport Beach Film Festival stands up well against the festival heavyweights. "They've done an amazing job in their 13 years of building a festival," Arnold said. "For them to build this festival here so close to L.A., …

Family Style Earth Day at Newport's Back Bay

Nature exhibits, an environmental film, endangered birds and gourmet food trucks were part of the Earth Day celebration in Newport Beach.

Overcast skies lined Newport's Upper Back Bay on Sunday but didn't stop environmental enthusiasts, curious kids and the occasional foodie from gathering at the 22nd annual Upper Newport Bay Earth Day Celebration.  The Newport Bay Conservancy's event was held at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center and included interactive games, nature exhibits for kids that gave them more insight into endangered species, conservation tips and information about the Back Bay. "People don't realize the biodiversity that is here," Patrick McCaffrey, the conservancy's volunteer and programs coordinator, said about the Back Bay. "There is as much biodiversity here as in a rainforest, but here it doesn't look as pretty." Despite its exotic appearance, the…

PHOTOS: Giant Waves Pound the Wedge in Newport Beach

Boogie boarders challenge the massive sets at the Wedge on Saturday.

Newport Beach police closed the jetties and lifeguard rescue boats partoled waters off of the Wedge on Saturday as 12-foot waves slammed body surfers and boogie boarders in the sand after their ride down the face of the massive surf.

Documentary Offers Insight Into Bullying at Schools

"Bully" premiered at the Lido Theatre Tuesday night, sparking discussions among students from Newport Beach who want to spread an anti-bully message.

Experts say more than 13 million kids -- some from Newport Beach -- will be bullied this year and the effects can be deadly. That's the message the documentary "Bully" is working to convey to audiences nationwide. The anti-bullying documentary premiered in Newport Beach Tuesday night at the Lido Theatre and attracted members from the Orange County Film Society, local students and members from Corona del Mar High School's Human Relations Council (HRC). The documentary is set to be released on Friday, March 30 and highlights a group of kids and parents who have been affected by bullying in schools. "If you look at the physical scars of bullying they disappear really quickly, but the emotional scars stick with us forever," said Jerry Weichman…

Photos: Saving the Historic Shawnee

Dennis Holland, a Newport Beach ship restorer, faces a fine of $1,000 a day and jail time.

Newport Beach resident Dennis Holland has been ordered by an Orange County judge to remove the historic Shawnee from his Newport Beach yard or face a fine of $1,000 a day and jail time. The 72-foot ship was built for one of the founding fathers of Newport Beach and was the first ship to sail through the Panama Canal. Holland told Patch on Monday that the Shawnee is a piece of Newport Beach history that "should be preserved." Holland has been working on the ship for six years and believes that the ship will be damaged beyond repair if it is moved at this time. City officials told the Los Angeles Times that Holland has been in violation of city laws for several years and has had a sufficient amount of time to relocate the boat to a suitable …

Surely there are boat enthusiasts who could help Mr Holland with his restoration work? The City should be supporting this enterprise and enabling the ship to be restored to a point where it is able to be moved to a ship yard, completely refurbished and then on to a ship museum. This is part of USA history and should be preserved; think of the tourist interest. Mr Holland has taken on too much for…   more ›
