Baseball: Most Local Teams Must Play Their Way Into Round 1

Some schools, such as El Toro, were solidly in the playoff field. Others have to play wild card games today to get into the playoff bracket. One local school is seeded in the top four.

They're longshots to begin with, and their chances of winning a Southern Section baseball title won't be helped by having to play a wild card game today just to get into the first round of the playoffs. But that's the task facing teams such as JSerra, San Clemente and Capistrano Valley in Division 1 and Trabuco Hills and San Juan Hills in Division 2. For them, the do-or-die playoffs begin today, which will put extra strain on pitching rotations that must win five games to win a title once the first round begins on Thursday for some times and Friday for others. The playoff pairings for the seven divisions were released on Monday by the Southern Section office, and there was only one south Orange County team that was seeded into one of the …

Golf: Hossler Leads SMCHS to Section Championship

Beau Hossler fires a 6-under 65 as Santa Margarita holds off Long Beach Wilson to win the Southern Section team championship.

It helps to have a built-in advantage, and any time Beau Hossler steps on the golf course these days, he's an advantage for Santa Margarita Catholic. Hossler shot a 6-under 65 at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course and led the Eagles to a five-stroke victory over Long Beach Wilson in the Southern Section Team Championship Hossler seems to be on a tear. The third-ranked junior golfer in the country, he won the Trinity League title with a 4-under 31 at Willowick Golf Course to win the Trinity League title. On Thursday, Hossler had seven birdies and won medalist honors by five strokes as the Eagles became the fourth consecutive Trinity League team to win the title. Servite had won the last three titles. Other county teams in the tournament included…

Lacrosse: Corona del Mar Ends Foothill's 5-Year Reign

San Clemente also reaches boys' final, while Los Alamitos and CdM will play for the girls' title.

When U.S. Lacrosse Division 1 South crowns a champion on Wednesday at Dana Hills High, the ceremony will have a decidedly different look than it has the past five years. There will be no Foothill. That's because Corona del Mar continued its historic unbeaten season by defeating the five-time defending champion, 7-5, during semifinal play on Saturday. Casey Mix and Michael Keasey had three goals apiece for CdM (22-0), and goalie Michael Ortleib had 13 saves as the Sea Kings turned back the Knights. When the boys' final commences at 7 p.m., Corona del Mar (22-0) will face off against San Clemente (15-6). It will be a big night for CdM, which will also play for the girls' title beginning at 5 p.m. The Tritons were in a battle, but emerged …

Deja Vu: Brazilian Wins Nike Lowers Pro

Gabriel Medina, 18, dominates the competition with powerful surfing and aerial maneuvers. Last year, Brazil's Miguel Pupo snagged the crown.

An 18-year-old Brazilian who dazzled spectators with aerial maneuvers won the Nike Lowers Pro surfing contest Saturday at San Onofre State Park's Lower Trestles. It was the second year in a row a Brazilian took the crown. In 2011, Miguel Pupo won the Association of Surfing Professionals contest. This year, Gabriel Medina put on quite a show throughout the competition’s five-day run, scoring several perfect-10 rides in the 2- to 4-foot glassy surf. The victory earned him $40,000, a 14-karat golden railroad spike as well as coveted point ratings for the Association of Surfing Professionals. “Everyone was surfing really well,” said Medina. “Dane [Reynolds] was my inspiration and Glenn [Hall] surfed really well today.” The final round pitted …

Off The Hook: Fishing Report

Video: Barracuda Show and Giant Lingcod

Plus: Anglers on the Toronado are greeted with gunfire and booms near San Clemente Island.

Southern California anglers continue to experience good rockfishing as they await the beginning of this year's surface fishing season. There have been some encouraging signs south of the border, as well as improving conditions in our local waters. Ensenada Capt. Mike Slater reported good barracuda fishing on Wednesday near Todos Santos Island in Ensenada, Baja California. The toothy critters were being taken on blue and white lures. The captain of the Gamefisher Ensenada also said there were good schools of 15- to 20-pound yellowtail, but very few of the yellowtail were caught. San Diego A few 18- to 25-pound yellowtail were being taken daily around the Coronado Islands and La Jolla. You see a lot more fish than you catch, which is typical…

Ninety-six professional surfers from around the world including the Associated Surfing Professional’s top 34 surfers will be taking over the Lower Trestles lineup May 1 through May 5 for the Nike Lowers Pro, an ASP six-star prime event. Football Playoffs Get New Look for 2012

The Pac-5 Division loses the Sunset League but gains the Marmonte League for football playoffs. Sunset teams now face the likes of La Habra and Tustin.

Playoff road trips just got longer. The Southern Section on Wednesday made a huge change in the section's football playoffs, moving the Sunset League out of the Pac-5 Division and replacing it with the Marmonte League. That means South Orange County's southernmost teams could travel to Ventura to play St. Bonaventure. Or vice verse.  It likely means that next year's Pac-5 championship will be harder to defend for Santa Margarita Catholic, and harder to win for teams such as Mission Viejo, San Clemente and Tesoro. Those four teams reached the semifinals last season. Santa Margarita will go into the season as the favorite to repeat as champion but will be looking at teams such as Westlake (14-1 in 2011), Westlake Village Oaks Christian (11-3…

As a coach in the Sea View League I am excited about the new changes. It is going to be tougher for my team but I like the change from the norm. The Southwest Division is very strong and every league has about two or three great teams. Tustin and La Habra tend to dominate the division but now Sunset teams like Edison and Huntington Beach will contend. The Pacific Coast League was not ready for an…   more ›
