Small Brush Fire Put Out in Newport Coast

Officials say a downed power line may have caused the blaze. No injuries are reported.

A vegetation fire scorched a small area of Newport Coast today, but no injuries were reported and no structures were damaged, a fire official reported. Cause of Downed Power Lines on 405 Still Under Investigation

Power to about 2,500 local homes wasn't fully restored until about 3:15 Friday morning.

Southern California Edison is still trying to determine why power lines fell Thursday on the 405 near Magnolia Street in Fountain Valley. Edison spokesman Darryl Ryan said Friday that crews were investigating the cause of the incident, which blocked portions of the freeway for about two hours Thursday afternoon -- and knocked out power for about 2,500 Fountain Valley homes and businesses. Electrical service wasn't fully restored until about 3:15 a.m. Friday, Ryan said. The blackout also affected traffic signals at two major intersections in Fountain Valley, but police reported no accidents. Ryan couldn't confirm whether any work was being done in the area before the lines went down, but SCE's outage map indicated Thursday that a planned …

As Car Dangled From Bridge, Teacher Feared Child Had Been Thrown Out

The San Juan Capistrano teacher appears on the Today show to tell her story for the first time. Then the show reunites her with two of her rescuers.

Kelli Groves, the San Juan Capistrano teacher whose car dangled off a Santa Barbara bridge for hours in a January rescue that made headlines around the world, spoke for the first time publicly Tuesday on “Today.” “I could not see either one of them,” Groves said of her two daughters, ages 10 and 10 weeks, who were also trapped in the borrowed BMW, hardly recognizable as it clung to a guardrail, more off than on the bridge. Watch the video here. Groves is a teacher at Del Obispo Elementary, where her daughter Sage also attends. She was on maternity leave after having Mylo. The threesome was headed to visit the mission at San Luis Obispo for Sage’s fourth-grade mission project. That’s when suddenly, just south of Buellton, a driver of a big …

Yes, the story does identify the accident site as just south of Buellton. I went there personally in February. But we're so far south here in Orange County, that Santa Barbara is the nearest reference point for our readers.
