Capo Parent, Why the name calling?

Because factual and respectful discussions aren't getting the results wanted. It's easier to trashRead More than it is to back up a losing prospect.

Mike T. Most students at UCI are US citizens. Almost all U.S.A. citizens are descendants ofRead More immigrants except for Native Americans.
Nancy March 22, 2014 at 07:30 pm
Mike T, are those "White Americans" possibly German Americans, Irish Americans, or ??Read More Would you venture to guess how many of the Asian American students don't speak a word of Chinese? Perhaps half or more? Koreans, Vietnamese, Thai, and Japanese (to name a few) don't speak Chinese. Please tell me you knew this already. Just like we might not speak Spanish, Portuguese, or French even though we're from the "Americas"-- yet those other languages dominate in eastern Canada, Latin America, and Brazil. There are large numbers of UCI students with Asian heritage (NOT nationality) in other southeast Asian countries who are not Chinese.

Nancy, shelly, Y'all need to speak Bircherese. 'Americans' does not include Asian Americans.Read More Because, LOOK AT THEM.

If this is really the case why is just about every school in SVUSD still sending out donationRead More request letters stating "due to severe budget cuts" there is no money for this program?? They will never tell you the money is not going to the classroom it is going to pay pensions and salaries. I know, I know .....it is for the kids. Sure it is.

UCI wants Pres. Obama to give this year's commencement address. Patch file photo.

@Donna Fleming, I hope you aren't saying that researching, reading and understanding history beyondRead More our own personal experiences is invalid. Jobs WERE plentiful. Manufacturing started moving overseas and continued to do so. In the late '90's and the early 00's is when white collar jobs started following suit. While your desire to blame President Obama for that is well communicated it is not a possibility.
fact checker February 19, 2014 at 12:08 pm
In fact, President Obama has advocated strongly for investing in infrastructure (which is what theRead More CCC and other programs set up after the depression did). The economic crisis caused your sons, difficulty. The private sector (mostly large corporations( have not done their job to help the recovery. They worship profits for the few over better opportunities for the rest of us.
Nancy February 19, 2014 at 12:10 pm
Donna, I am surprised that you believe the job-finding problems are a result of our most-immediateRead More president. Surely you must know that previous presidents (and congress) were instrumental in creating the legislation and lack of oversight that allowed jobs to be shipped abroad. And regarding the CCC: well now, you're sounding like a liberal...watch out! I think it would be fabulous to have a similar job force to work on our crumbling infrastructure. But you CAN'T do that if you cut government! The CCC didn't just spring up from volunteers; it was a government program. For the record, Obama has actually done a similar program. Have you noticed the freeway signs from the Obama administrations recovery act? This is both a job creator and a public safety win/win. http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/map21/summaryinfo.cfm
Six school districts in Orange County have been placed on the College Board's "AP Honor Roll."
keyplayer February 13, 2014 at 08:32 am
Wow, Joker. I think your petticoat is showing. Teachers have nothing to do with grading the APRead More tests. But then, you wouldn't have a clue about that, would you?
Shripathi Kamath February 13, 2014 at 08:40 am
ldana92 February 13, 2014 at 09:22 AM I thought the AP tests are given in May??? It is only Feb.Read More ___________________________________________________ They are being done proactively for 2013.
Don Schultz February 15, 2014 at 07:37 am
"The distinction means the districts are increasing access to AP classes while simultaneouslyRead More increasing the percentage of students earning passing scores of 3 or higher on the AP test" While this may be the "ideal scenario" as you call it, never ending improvement is hardly sustainable unless the rules of the game change which they will. The problem with your article is that its misleading, it leads the uninitiated reader to conclude that CUSD and LB some how came up short compared to the districts on the list. This is not true. Neither CUSD nor LB would trade their scores with ANY of those other districts because CUSD's and LB's record is better, just not improving as much as the others because they have less to improve upon. CUSD is among the top large districts in the state and LB is among the elite small districts. Both are constantly and consistently improving.

Should teachers have a dress code? Patch photo credit: Penny Arévalo
Sonny Morper January 19, 2014 at 09:40 am
As a principal, retired, for 28 years, "dress for success" is a good motto and the styleRead More should fit the classroom. Expect teachers on their feet all day to dress in comfortable shoes, tennis shoes, for P.E., for sure. The more business type look is more appealing but dressing like you are going to church is not necessary. Women's styles usually get the most attention over time. High heels, nylons and dress or skirts were the norm when I taught. Shorter skirts and pant suits soon became the style, men wore sport coats and always a tie. School administrators, including women, have generally maintained a more conservative business look, though suits have gone the way of cotton slacks particularly with middle and high school educators modeling spirit shirts and other school labeled clothing. Today, any teacher is general accepted when wearing less formal school clothes, in fact they seem to add to student school spirit when they do wear the school emblemed items. The sexy look of provocative clothes has no place in the school business, but the look is in the eye of the beholder and many times in the negotiated contract. Where today's cleavage look was out when I started teaching, today a sensible approach is to ask whether it detracts from ones ability to teach or administer with the greatest positive effect or is the " look" detracting from a great educator becoming exceptionally great. Tongues will wag among our adolescent youth with little provocation and certainly among their parents. Better to portray the competent, highly thought of professional educator who is working to make the school distinguished than known for unnecessary, unfortunate, and derisive behind the back comments that only bring contempt to the profession. The chances are better for success and higher performing schools when everyone dresses for success including students, parents who come to the school, and most important those who are there to educate. P.S. Leave the flip flops at home, everyone.

the entire system is Corrupt... Govt gone wild. Give him his HUGE pension and let him go sit on theRead More Beach. and suk off the taxpayers for the rest of his life
Chip Long January 4, 2014 at 07:25 am
My sentiments exactly. A jury found hime guilty and the taxpayers spent hundred of thousands ofRead More dollars, if not millions and then the verdict is over ridden. I guess its who you know.

Funny how every time we hear about some "PUBLIC SERVANT" getting so and so salary orRead More raise, it is always "after we studied comparable salaries" How about these YEAHOOS that are spending the tax payers money start using common sense. oops, Sorry look what I wrote about a governing body paid for by the tax payers.
Chip Long October 24, 2013 at 05:18 pm
This salary increase was not necessary. When was the last time the teachers received a 6% salaryRead More increase. He is the highest paid district employee, why give him a raise. This is just another case of the government gone wild. Maybe the only option is for the taxpayers to quit paying their taxes. i am mad as hell and fed up.
ace October 25, 2013 at 10:44 am
@Chip Long..Good luck with not paying taxes into the public tax ponzi scheme. They will throw you inRead More jail or take your assets. The system is broke and broke BAD...They know it and don't care, it is all about getting as much as they can for themselves before the system Implodes. Only 5% of the taxpayers are mad as hell the rest simply don't care . One day the Sheeple will wake up a demand CHANGE I feel your pain... GGW
