Not All Sunscreens Are Alike

Understand the new labeling rules to choose and use the best sunscreen for your skin type.

Before you stash your sunscreen into your beach bag, tennis bag, glove compartment or wherever you keep it handy for upcoming sunny days, take a minute to be sure you’re applying ultimate protection. Check the label. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) revised the requirements for sunscreen labeling last year, and the changes take effect this summer. Broad-spectrum protection. This means the sunscreen protects from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays cause skin aging and damage, and UVB rays cause sunburn. Neither is good, so you need to defend your skin against both. Under the new labeling rules, a sunscreen can be labeled “broad-spectrum” only if it protects against both types of harmful rays. No such thing as waterproof. Sunscreen labels…

The 43-year-old is burned by rocks from San Onofre State Beach that mysteriously ignited. She is hospitalized with third-degree burns.

How rocks from a southern Orange County beach caught fire in the pocket of a San Clemente woman's cargo shorts, landing her in a hospital with third-degree burns, remained a mystery today. The 43-year old woman's children picked up the seven orange and green rocks on Saturday at San Onofre State Beach, which is popular with surfers and known locally as Trestles. Cancer Survivor Helps Raise $13 Million for Hoag Hospital

Newport Beach resident Sandy Sewell beat the odds against breast cancer and has created a legacy at Hoag Hospital's Family Cancer Institute.

Sandy Sewell was diagnosed with breast cancer 35 years ago, and today is the driving force behind $13 million in donations to Hoag Hospital's Family Cancer Institute. Sewell was 42 when she was first diagnosed by a family doctor who administered a mammogram and told her she would have five to 10 years to live. Her breast was removed the next day.  “When I had breast cancer, there was no cancer center here. There were no oncologists in Orange County,” Sewell, of Newport Beach, explained. “I was the first person in my neighborhood that had cancer that anyone knew even about… [Back then] people were afraid to talk [about cancer].” Following radiation Sewell made a successful recovery and 10 years after her battle with cancer began, she and …

Edison: Cause of Downed Lines on 405 Could Take Weeks to Determine

Caltrans is also involved in the investigation of the incident, which blocked the freeway for two hours and knocked out power to 2,500 local customers.

An explanation for why power lines fell onto the 405 Freeway last Thursday could take weeks to determine, a spokesman for Southern California Edison said Wednesday. "As you can imagine with something like this, this is a complex matter," Edison spokesman David Song said. "A lot of times, it takes weeks on these. This isn't a typical case." The lines fell Thursday afternoon near the Magnolia Street exit in Fountain Valley, shutting down much of the freeway for about two hours. The incident also knocked out power for about 2,500 local customers until about 3:15 a.m. Friday. Edison is working with Caltrans on the investigation. However, Caltrans spokeswoman Yvonne Washington said Wednesday that Edison hadn't shared any information about a …

If the utility companies were not years behind other countries, there would be NO overhead lines anywhere in the U.S. For example, the telephone co. had an agreement years ago that they would place 25% of their lines underground per year in Fountain Valley. John Collins used to report on this to us every year, but haven't heard about this in recent years. Looking at the size of my city, they …   more ›
