Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve is approximately 140 acres of open space within the additional 752 acres of the Ecological Reserve. Its main feature is its three bluffs: The California Gnatcatcher, San Diego Cactus Wren and Burrowing Owl. It is home to six rare and endangered species, as well as the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center.
