Holiday Closures, Last-Minute Shopping, CHP Beefs Up Patrols

Handy information for the week of Christmas.

1. Newport Beach City Hall, recreation programs, and certain other City programs and services will be closed for the holidays from 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24 through Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014. City offices will re-open on Thursday, Jan. 2.

2. Newport Beach Central Library and branch libraries will be closed as of 1 p.m. on Dec. 24 and all day Dec. 25. The libraries will be open Dec. 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30 (check hours at newportbeachlibrary.org). The Central Library and branch libraries will be closed as of 1 p.m. on Dec. 31 and all day Jan. 1.

3. Tuesday is the last day for Christmas shopping, and many national chains plan to stay open late on Christmas Eve. Toys R Us stores will be open round-the-clock until 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve, and most Walmart stores will be open until 8 p.m.

4. If you’re planning to be on the freeways during the holiday, be careful. The CHP plans maximum enforcement from 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve to midnight on Christmas Day. Officers will be on heightened alert for drivers who speed, fail to buckle-up, or are driving under the influence.

5. Trash collection will be on its regular schedule on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 23 and 24. There will be no trash collection on Wednesday, Dec. 25. Instead, collection will occur on Thursday. For the rest of the week, collection will occur one day later than normal. Trash normally collected on Friday will be picked up on Saturday. Street Sweeping Information – There will be no street sweeping on Dec. 24, 25, 31 or on Jan. 1.
