Christmas Donations, Food Bank Donations, First Day of Winter

Events taking place today and this week in Newport Beach.

1. The city of Newport Beach is currently accepting holiday gifts to benefit the men and women serving in the Unites States military and their families. This year the city is asking for new and unwrapped children's toys, DVDs for military members, gift cards and cash donations. Donations can be made at several city locations through Dec. 23. Find drop-off locations here.

2. Today from 3-4 p.m, a LEGO block party will be held at the Mariners Branch Library, 1300 Irvine Ave. in Newport Beach. All ages are welcomed to design, build and invent with LEGOs at this fun, creative program.

3. The week before Christmas is a great time to donate food to needy local families. Consider a donation of food of funds to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County. The organization distributes more than 18 million pounds of food annually through hundreds of community partners.

4. The Newport Beach Planning Commission will meet Thursday at 3 p.m. Read the meeting agenda here.

5. Saturday is the first day of winter. We don’t always acknowledge this season in Southern California, but after a period of unusually cold weather and pleas to conserve natural gas, it sure feels like winter. Here’s a link to the official winter forecast.
