'Presents for Paws' Helps Make Dogs, Cats Adoptable

Blankets and toys are needed for animals in local shelters.

With the holiday season in full swing, a local group has started collecting gifts for animals in need of comfort.

Desperate Paws of Orange County Dog Club launched its second annual Presents for Paws Drive this week to gather blankets and toys for needy dogs and cats. The collection will run through Monday, Dec. 5, and will benefit animals from Orange County Animal Care and Los Angeles Animal Services.

Stephen Terry, co-founder of the DPOC Dog Club, said providing items for the shelter animals gives them a better shot at adoption.

"Remember, these are dogs and cats that will be euthanized if not adopted," Terry said. "So with a donation, people are making it possible for the dogs to stay warm in the winter and helps both the dogs and cats to be active and playful, thus making it more likely they will be adopted."

Last year, the group collected more than 400 toys, but this year, with the help of local businesses participating as drop-off locations, the hope is to collect a lot more.

"We are very grateful to these businesses that have partnered with the Presents for Paws Drive by dedicating their retail shops and restaurants to be a collection location," Terry said. "It will allow for easier access for people to participate and join in helping needy and adoptable dogs and cats."
