Police Enforcing Summer Curfew

The aim is to keep juveniles from crime—as victims or as perpetrators.

This week the Newport Beach Police Department began its crackdown on enforcing the curfew while juveniles are on summer break.

The city curfew ordinance prohibits any person under the age of 18 from loitering in streets, alleys and other public places between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Police say the curfew enforcement is in response to a recent increase in theft-related crimes committed throughout the city during nighttime hours by juveniles, but is also intended to keep kids from becoming crime victims themselves.

"It is the police department’s intent to enforce this law as a means to reduce crime while at the same time protecting juveniles from potentially being crime victims themselves," Kathy Lowe, police spokeswoman, said in a released statement.
