Watch: 11 Year-Old Catches His First Halibut

Southern California anglers found a sun drenched weekend that made for a great time to be out on the water and the Santa Ana winds made for spectacular views.

Anglers on board boats from Marina del Rey and Redondo could see Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands while boats from San Clemente to Long Beach could see as far as San Clemente Island. Eleven-year-old Manual Medina, from Carson, was also on board a boat. He started taking trips with his 9-year-old brother Hector about  six months ago and now that’s all he can talk about.

Medina found himself fishing this past weekend just off Seal Beach when he hooked something really big on the sportfisher Westerly out of Long Beach Sportfishing. “It felt like I had bottom but then it started to come up,” he said.

As he looked down in the water, he could see something brown and flat rising to the surface. “Halibut,” said Captain Jeff Jones who had been coaching Medina before and during the battle.

Deckhand Todd Lee netted the flatfish, made sure it was over 22 inches and the smiles and celebration began. “I can’t believe I caught my first halibut. This is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me,” Medina said.
