Tennis: CdM Falls Again to Nation's Top Team

University continues its unbeaten streak with its fourth consecutive team tennis championship. The senior class didn't lose a match.

For the second year in a row, Corona del Mar was one of the best boys' tennis teams in the land.

Just not the best.

At the Southern Section Division 1 Championship on Friday, University remained undefeated by scoring a 13-5 victory over the Sea Kings.

University is 21-0 on the season and ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Corona del Mar is 22-3. All the losses were to University.

It's the second year in a row CdM was runner-up to the Trojans for the section title. The Sea Kings lost last year's championship match by the same 13-5 count.

It's the fourth straight section title for University, which has won 86 consecutive matches dating back to 2009. The senior class didn't lose a match all season.

After losing twice in league play, CdM tried to shake things up in the finals by loading its doubles teams. It got the Sea Kings a few points but not nearly enough, and the team paid a price by losing eight of nine in singles.

Josh Kliger and Carson Williams won two of their three doubles sets for Corona del Mar. Sophomore Chaz Downing and freshman Pedro Fernandez also won a doubles match, as did freshman Bjorn Hoffmann and Andrew Nguyen.

Alec Adamson scored CdM's only point in singles play.

The teams could meet once more this season, in the first Southern California Regional Tournament which begins Tuesday.
