Sports Shorts: Sea Kings Look to Reverse 'Battle of the Bay' Trend

Corona del Mar, which has lost the last four games against its neighbor rival Newport Harbor, comes into Friday's game with an undefeated record, while the Sailors have yet to win a game. Plus cross-country, boys water polo and girls volleyball news.

A number of streaks are on the line Friday night at Orange Coast College, the site of the 50th annual “Battle of the Bay” football game between neighboring Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor highs.

Corona del Mar (3-0) comes into the game and undefeated, including one victory over a Sunset League team (Huntington Beach) and looking to make it one more. Newport Harbor (0-2) has yet to win a game this season, but the Sailors have won the last four “Battle of the Bay” games.

The odds would seem to favor the Sea Kings, who have defeated Savanna, 40-7; , and . The latter two victories came courtesy late-game touchdowns by senior running back Erik Fisher, who has rushed for 361 yards. Quarterback Brent Lawson hs thrown for 569 yards and six touchdowns.

Newport Harbor’s losses have been to Pac-5 teams , and Loyola of Los Angeles, 27-0. The Sailors are still reeling from the summer transfer of running back Buzzy Yokoyama to Mission Viejo and are still trying to find their offense -- they passed for only 82 yards and rushed for 51 against the Cubs. But assuming it can reverse its trend of turning over the ball, don’t ever count out a Jeff Brinkley-coached team.

Scott Meyer, Corona del Mar’s first-year coach, is aware of the historically uphill battle his team faces -- the Sailors hold a 36-13 series edge. "It really hasn't been much of a rivalry historically because Newport's dominated the game," Meyer told the Daily Pilot. "But our kids will be excited. Kids will have a huge crowd there. Hopefully, it's a good game."

I don’t think there’s any chance it won’t be, coach.

If you can’t score a ticket -- the game sells out almost every year -- you can catch the action streamed live on FoxSportsWest.com’s “Prep Zone,” beginning with the 7 p.m. kickoff.

Sage Hill (1-2) is off this week but resumes play on Saturday, Oct. 1, with a 7 p.m. home game against La Jolla The Bishop's.
