Sea Kings Top Final National Volleyball Rankings

After winning the CIF Southern Section and Southern California Regional Division 2 championships, Sea Kings vault to top of Powerade Fab 50/ESPN RISE national rankings.

For most of the 2011 boys volleyball season in Southern California, powerhouses Santa Margarita and Mira Costa battled for the No. 1 ranking in the Powerade Fab 50/ESPN RISE national rankings.

But when the dust settled after the CIF Southern Section and Southern California Regional playoffs, Corona del Mar finished atop the final rankings as the national champions.

The Sea Kings (32-4) defeated Laguna Beach, 3-1, in the Southern Section Division 2 championship, then knocked off Westlake, 3-1, in the Regional Division 2 final.

Mater Dei, the Southern Section Division 1 champion, finished fourth and Division 1 runner-up Santa Margarita was sixth in the final rankings. Also among the top 50 teams nationwide was Newport Harbor at No. 21 and Dana Hills at No. 49.

Here's a reminder that the for boys and girls volleyball players are scheduled for Friday at Newport Harbor High. The North vs. South games, featuring the county's top seniors, will begin with the girls game at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at approximately 7:30 p.m.
