Chislock Leads Huntington Beach Past Sailors, 35-7

Michael Chislock runs and passes Oilers to victory and a 2-0 record in Sunset League play. Newport Harbor must regroup before its showdown with Los Alamitos next Friday.

Huntington Beach High's football team is showing that it's ready to be a contender for the Sunset League title and a worthy opponent in the CIF Southern Section's Pac-5 Division playoffs.

The Oilers put on a football clinic on Friday night, when they rolled to a convincing 35-7 victory over Newport Harbor, in a Sunset League game at Huntington Beach High.

The Oilers (6-1 overall, 2-0 in league) had little trouble moving the ball and nearly as little trouble keeping it away from the Sailors. Aside from shutting out the Sailors on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, Huntington Beach also recovered two onside kicks after touchdowns to extend the pressure on the Newport Harbor defense.

Two missed field goals by the Oilers in the first half kept the game within Newport Harbor's reach, but by the end of the third quarter, Huntington Beach was in total control.

After holding the Sailors to three plays and a punt on their opening drive of the third quarter, the Oilers took possession at the 50-yard line. Ten plays later, quarterback Michael Chislock ran up the middle on a fourth-and-two play for an 11-yard touchdown that gave the Oilers a 21-0 lead.

“They beat us in every aspect of the game,” Sailors coach Jeff Brinkley said.

Newport Harbor (3-4, 1-1) had 125 passing yards from senior quarterback Cole Blower as it tried to rally late to get back into the game, but the Sailors struggled to control the ball with their ground game.

Conversely, the Oilers had 214 rushing yards from senior Nolan Biegel and another 64 from Chislock, who also threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns. His 17-yard scoring pass to sophomore Kai Ross, who made a leaping catch at the back corner of the end zone, pushed Huntington Beach's lead to 28-0 with 46 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Sailors were finally able to get on the board early in the fourth quarter with a big play. Pass interference and personal foul penalties against Huntington Beach on the same play moved the ball to the Sailors' 48-yard line and from there Blower hit Vince Aqueveque down the right side for a 52-yard touchdown that cut the deficit to 28-7 with 9:50 left in the game.

But the Oilers would answer on the ensuing possession with a quick drive that ended with Biegel rambling 45 yards for a touchdown.

Brinkley said his team knows they now have no margin for error. “Our backs are against the wall, we have to win some games here consecutively to get into the playoffs,” he said. The Sailors will try to rebound as they return home to host Los Alamitos (5-2, 1-1) on Friday.

Huntington Beach, which opened the game with a 13-play drive that ended with a Chislock's four-yard touchdown run, will face Edison (5-2, 2-0) for a share of the league lead on Thursday at Huntington Beach High.
