Newport Beach Native Scores His First NHL Goal

Jason Zucker, one of few NHL players from Orange County, scored his first goal Sunday to propel his team to victory.

Jason Zucker, a 21-year-old Newport Beach native scored his first goal in the National Hockey League Sunday night to help his team beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2.

Zucker, a left winger for the Minnesota Wild sped along the boards to beat the Red Wings defense and snapped a wrist shot past Red Wings goalie Peter Mrazeck.

Red Wings Announcer Ken Daniels put the goal into perspective.

“How about Jason Zucker, who just scored on Peter Mrazeck,” said Daniels. “A little bit of revenge for him because he was the captain for the World Junior Team for United States in 2012 when Peter Mrazeck knocked them out with a 52-save performance.”

One of few Orange County natives to break into the NHL, Zucker, has played seven games with the Wild this season and was drafted in the second round of the 2010 entry draft.
