Monday Surf Report

Surf Junkie Jeff talks surf conditions.

Waking up with the waves on Monday, I'm Surf Junkie Jeff with your Newport Beach Patch surf report.  Well, we're seeing some playful size surf, but many spots in this neck of the woods are starting off pretty slow due to the early morning high tide.  Look for things to improve later this morning.

We're seeing some nice and clean conditions early on, with a mix of mostly south-southwesterly energy and some smaller leftover west-northwest swell.  That recipe is making for some kinda soft sectiony lines, with a few fast shoulders.

Most spots in Newport Beach are running about knee- to chest-high, with those top south facing breaks pulling a few larger sets, especially once that tide drops a bit.

At 6:16 this morning the tide pushed up to a 5.3 high which will have many spots pretty swamped.  The tide then drains out to a negative 0.5 low at 1:19 this afternoon.

If you're planning on paddling, throw on at least the 3/2 fullsuit or a 4/3 and possibly the booties, with the water temperature averaging between 56 and 58 degrees.

FYI: County Health Officials urge surfers and swimmers to stay out of the water after a rain for at least 72 hours, especially near river mouths, harbor entrances and storm drains.
