Junior lifeguards kicked off the action for the 2012 California Surf LifeSaving Association Championships Friday in Newport Beach.
The day of competition included distance runs, run-swim-run and paddle relays. The competition continues on Saturday with the professional lifeguard events. By the end of the weekend, more than 3,000 professional and junior lifeguards will have competed in the championships on the south side of the Newport Beach Pier.
Saturday's race will include surf boat races and the multi-discipline Ironman and Ironwoman events. The event kick off at 8 a.m. and will wrap up around 3:30 p.m.
