Football: Schedule for Week 3

Monster showdown among public school powers, and an emotional game for a school that tries to win one for Nick.

By Martin Henderson

Here is the Week 3 football schedule for teams in Patch cities in Orange County. Games begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

The schedule includes the game of the night in Orange County:

  • Mission Viejo is coming off an epic victory overtime victory over Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Tech. Will the Diablos, who ascended to No. 1 in the Orange County Top 10 this week, suffer a letdown? La Habra has been going against Pac-5 competition for a few years—and it helped the program win four consecutive section championships. Still, the Highlanders haven't been able to break through against the great program. This would be the biggest nonleague victory in the school's history if they can pull through.
  • JSerra cracked the top 10 for the first time in school history with its victory over Huntington Beach. The Lions can't get complacent against an inferior team with one of the most dangerous players they'll face. Can JSerra's squadron of playmakers out-perform Buena Park's Deven Boston the way it did Huntington Beach's Kai Ross? Last year, the Lions scraped by with a 15-14 victory.
  • Trabuco Hills is coming off a nice victory over Fountain Valley, from the Sunset League, and this week play another Sunset opponent, Huntington Beach. Like JSerra, Trabuco Hills is playing an opponent it needs to beat to validate itself as one of the county's best teams this season.
  • Corona del Mar is undefeated but has lost six years in a row to its arch-rival, Newport Harbor. The annual Battle for the Bell figures to be in full song for this one as the Sea Kings try to extend their winning streak to 14 games while breaking their losing streak to Newport.
  • For all the emotion that may be packed into those other games, it figures to pale to Saddleback Valley Christian when it steps on the field against San Diego Rock Academy. The first home game will be used to honor Nick Siciliani, a lineman who died over the summer with his father in an automobile accident.
