Football: Huntington Beach 40, Newport Beach 14

Sunset League: Kai Ross showed why he's such a dangerous player as the Oilers upset Newport Harbor's bid for a share of the league championship.

Newport Harbor missed an opportunity to share the Sunset League title with Edison by being upset by Huntington Beach. It's no surprise, given that Huntington Beach was predicted to finish second in the league in a preseason poll of coaches, although the score was enough to raise an eyebrow. And Kai Ross, a do-it-all quarterback, showcased his skills perhaps better than he has all season.

Score: Huntington Beach 40, Newport Harbor 14

Key Stats: Kai Ross rushed 15 times for 126 yards and three touchdowns, and completed 10 of 13 passes for 86 yards and another touchdown for Huntington Beach. He also intercepted a pass and had a 65-yard punt return to set up a touchdown.

Pivotal Moment: Newport Harbor pulled to 19-14 on Cole Norris’ 33-yard pass to Quest Truxton, but a little more than two minutes later, Huntington Beach had answered. The Oilers got a 6-yard scoring pass from Ross to Nolan Thompson for a 26-14 lead with 4:41 left in the first half. The game certainly wasn’t out of reach, but for the Sailors, it had to make them think, “What do we have to do to catch these guys?”

Quotable: “We're .500, in the toughest league (in the division) and we've had the toughest schedule over anybody that's eligible for a wild card, and if you look at the other teams, none of them could do this to that quality of a football team,” Huntington Beach coach Eric Lo told the Orange County Register.
