Football: Edison Carries Sunset League Banner Into State Playoff

Chargers, after first section title since 1985, plays Gardena Serra for the right to play for a Bowl Championship.

The Sunset League went eight years between winning Southern Section championships, and now Edison will try to carry the banner all the way to a State Bowl Championship.

The Chargers (13-1), who defeated Villa 28-10 Park last week in the Southwest Division final for the school's fifth championship—but first since 1985—will play host to Gardena Serra (12-2) at Orange Coast College tonight, 7:30 p.m.

The winner will advance to the State Division II Bowl Championship at Home Depot Center on Dec. 15 against either Clayton Valley Charter (12-1) or Oakdale (13-1).

Tickets are $12 Adult and $8 for Students and Seniors over 65 with ID. Tickets go on sale at OCC at 5:30 p.m.

Edison is the only Orange County team still playing; it has won 10 in a row since losing to Mater Dei, 20-14, on Sept. 21.

The Chargers have a strong physical defense that includes linebacker Robert Reyes, Derek Baljeu, Donald Rice and Alejandro Perez that will try to offset the speed advantage of Serra, which won the Western Division title with a 30-28 victory over West Hills Chaminade. That victory avenged a Mission League loss, 28-20, on Oct. 5.

Edison has shut out a school-record five opponents and held nine teams to seven points or less. Only once this season have the Chargers allowed more than 16 points. On the season, Edison has averaged 30.2 points and allowed 6.4.

Serra, carrying an eight-game winning streak, also lost to Harbor City Narbonne (14-0), which is the top-ranked team in Southern California and will play Corona Centennial (13-1) in the Open Regional.

The Cavaliers have averaged 34.8 points while allowing 14.

They have won three section titles in four finals over the last five seasons, and twice have played in Bowl Championships—winning the  Division III Bowl in 2009.

The last Sunset League team to win a football title was Los Alamitos in 2004.
