Diary of a Sailor: Sports Are a Great Way to Maintain Friendships

Newport Harbor High tennis player Kate Knight shares her journal entry for the week ending May 4.

Hi everybody,

It’s been a hasty couple of weeks filled with fun times and stressful situations. To start, these past two weekends I have been competing in another tennis tournament which was held at the campus of Cal State Fullerton. This was an especially fun tournament for me because pretty much all of the players were there at one time and I got to see many of my old friends. No matter what sport you play, whether tennis or not, it is a great way to meet new people and have lifelong friendships form.

Throughout the year there are tons of team tournaments where you become really close with the five or 10 people on your team. This past weekend I came back together with a few of my friends that were on my team in the Zone Team Championships which were held at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs last summer. We had a great time catching up and went wandering about the campus in-between matches. Word to the wise, for anyone looking to improve in your sport it’s really smart to connect with a bunch of different players. No matter what their level of play is, it’s great to find someone new to practice with and, who knows, an even better connection might come out of that.

Last week was the final week of my first Chinese (Mandarin) course. I was super stressed out over my final exam and was worried even more about the oral exam. It’s one thing to memorize the words, but to have an extremely speedy conversation with someone is a totally different story. Luckily, I did very well on both and feel very accomplished after my first completed course. I know that I’ve learned a lot and am very much looking forward to becoming as fluent as possible

I’ve had a fun past couple weeks and am excited for the week to come. Have a fantastic week everyone!
