Optometrist's Electricity Bill Drops from $640/Month to $39/Month with Installation of Solar System

Optometrist Eye Care West O.C. has installed a solar system on the roof of its Foothill Ranch facility which has reduced its monthly electricity bill from $640 to $39, or $7,212 in its first year.  The 56 solar panels were installed by solar solutions company ecoSolargy (www.ecoSolargy.com), located in Irvine.

“With generous government incentives available, many companies are finding that solar systems can be installed inexpensively and will dramatically reduce their monthly electricity bills,” said Alan H. Lee, CEO of ecoSolargy.  “Additionally, solar energy is clean energy so it also reduces pollutants in our environment.”

After taking advantage of incentives and rebates, the net cost of the system for Eye Care West O.C. was $16, 879.  Incentives include the solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which gives a 30% tax credit for companies which purchase solar energy systems to meet their energy needs.  The ITC will expire on December 31, 2016, however, so to qualify the solar project must be completed by December 31, 2016.

Other tax incentives that can be combined with the 30% ITC include the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS), which allows a company to recover its investment cost over a period of five years.  In reduced tax bills, the ITC and MACRS together can pay for about two-thirds of the cost of installing a solar system.

Martin Brix, Director of Commercial PV at ecoSolargy, noted that the Eye Care West O.C. solar system was designed to address the specific energy needs of the client.  The project began with an extensive energy study, he said, which outlined how and when the energy was being consumed.

He explained, “It’s not always about offsetting 100% of the electricity costs of a client, but about finding the proper balance between use and expense.  Our goal is to create a solution that optimizes energy production benefits and minimizes cost.”

“It’s a great time to harness the energy of the sun,” Lee concluded.
