Blog: Single Again, Together

Where I've been. Where I am. Where am I going?

After more than 25 years of marriage I am exiting a relationship that went at least a decade too long.

As the Dave Mason song once said “There ain’t no good guy, there ain’t no bad guy, there’s only you and me and we just disagree.” Fortunately children are all gone and there is little to fight about, so it’s time to move on. To what?

That is the question that prompts this column since there are many of us that are now “single again.” Some by mutual consent; some fighting and kicking; others by the death of your significant other. This column is a place for those past their 30s to share and learn and pass on the knowledge they/you have learned in the marketplace and to ask those questions that remain.

What’s it like being single in your “middle ages?” I am in my 50s and have not been single since MTV still played music videos and Madonna claimed to be a virgin. Back then we had no Internet dating, Facebook, no cell phone texting/ sexting chats at all hours and the world of being single was much more closed. Even today with many resources available it doesn’t guarantee success or a pain-free transition into, what? Happiness? Relationships? Marriage?

Where do you go as you first venture forth after a quarter century of being with one person? I have no idea, but some of the areas to explore include on-line dating, meet-up singles groups, church groups for those inclined that direction and many others.

This column is gender neutral as my sex and name will remain unstated so that both sides get their say. You may remain anonymous as well or reply via the comments section, e-mail directly or we can chat more personally if that is more comfortable. Do you have questions or advice or suggestions?

We’re all in this together, so let’s help others make this transition as pain free as possible.
