Three Students Hospitalized After Eating Pot-Laced Brownie

UPDATE: A 12-year-old is arrested after seventh-graders at TeWinkle Middle School in Costa Mesa are taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach.

Three TeWinkle Middle School seventh-graders who ate marijuana-laced brownies were taken to a hospital Wednesday, nearly a month after seven students ate pot-laced treats at Pomona Elementary School.

Costa Mesa firefighters were sent to TeWinkle about 3:15 p.m. to deal with the situation, Costa Mesa Deputy Fire Chief Fred Seguin said.

Police later arrested a 12-year-old boy who allegedly brought the brownie to school and shared it with other pupils, Lt. Greg Scott said. The boy, whose name was not released because of his age, was booked for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Scott said.

Five students complained they felt ill, Seguin said.

A few went to the nurse about 12:45 p.m. complaining of stomachaches, according to Laura Boss of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District. Another student complained of stomach distress about 2:45 p.m., she said.

Three of the students were taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach as a precaution, and two others were released to their parents and taken home, Boss said.

It's unclear whether the students who took bites out of the brownie knew it contained marijuana, she said.

"It's a very unfortunate event," Boss said. "We're just hopeful they're recuperating well."

Parents were notified about 1:30 p.m., Boss said.

Earlier Incident

Seven Pomona Elementary School students were sickened March 12 when a 12- year-old boy brought a marijuana-laced brownie to school. Another 12-year-old boy shared the marijuana brownie with other students.

One girl and six boys who took bites out of the brownie were taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, where they were treated for nausea.

The students who ate the brownie were unaware it had marijuana in it.
