Student Projects Featured at High School Film Festival

The first annual Newport-Mesa Film Festival will showcase student films, photographs, animations and designs created by local high school students.

High school students from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District are putting the finishing touches on short films, designs and animations that will be debuted at the first annual student film festival.

Students from Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, Costa Mesa and Estancia high schools have been working since December on projects for the Newport Mesa Film Festival. The festival will include seven short films, more than 70 photographs, plus animations and designs.

NHHS Senior Tyler Carlin is showcasing his 11 1/2 minute, comedic film about a zombie who craves Cheetos and risks it all to get his hands on some.

"It's always been my dream to be a film maker," Carlin said. "So I am really excited about this opportunity to show it to an audience."

The idea for the film festival was sparked by district teachers who wanted to promote the digital media arts classes.

"Competition tends to help promote student learning and helps inspire some interests and passions," Cermak.

Admission to the film festival is free, but attendees must request a ticket from one of the high schools' ASB offices.
