McCarthy Employees Roll Up Their Sleeves for Vets

The company's volunteer group renovates a local veteran's home.

A veterans home in Orange County was recently spruced up, thanks to employees from Newport Beach's McCarthy Building Cos.

The McCarthy Heart Hats—the company's volunteer group—recently embarked on a volunteer construction project worth about $20,000. The work was done at the Veterans First housing complex in Anaheim and included hanging drywall, painting, installing carpeting, kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures. The Heart Hats also built an outdoor shed, cleaned up the yard and did other landscape improvements.

But their act of kindness didn't stop there. One McCarthy employee also donated more than 28 new mattresses and box-spring sets, and others gave sheets, blankets and other bedding to the military veterans.

“As a U.S. Navy disabled veteran, helping veterans and especially disabled veterans is extremely important to me,” said employee Ray LaTour.  "Giving back to those who took up the calling of defending our freedom and our way of life is priceless, whether it's a simple thank you, a difficult home remodel or raising funds for the cause."

According to Veterans First, there are about 900 homeless veterans in Orange County. They need assistance with finding jobs and securing places to live.

“It saddens me that so many military veterans who have made our country safe by serving us and risking their lives are returning home from war only to find they are without a job and have nowhere to live,” said Linda Osborn, manager at McCarthy. “It’s the least we can do to give them a safe and comfortable place to lay their heads.”

In addition to the McCarthy employees, volunteers and donors from Bergelectic, Borbon Inc., Capparelli Contracting, Signature Flooring and Southern California Environmental helped with the improvement project.
