Neptune Ball Aims To Raise $250,000

Also, students must get whooping cough vaccinations.

Corona del Mar High's CdM Foundation is hoping to raise $250,000 with Neptune's Ball, which is set for April 1 at the Balboa Bay Club, to pay for counselors, special programs, academic resources and music teachers. The theme is "World Series." And the event will include a silent auction and dinner dance.

No Shot, No School

A new state law requires that all students entering grades 7 through 12 in the 2011-2012 school year have a booster shot—called the Tdap—against whooping cough before starting school.  The requirement is effective July 1, 2011. Parents need to provide proof that their child has received the Tdap before their child can go to school.

Stressless Testing

Students can experience the SAT or ACT this month without dealing with the stress of the real thing. Mock tests will be given at gym  Feb. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be a follow-up session where students will receive a detailed score report showing their strengths and weaknesses and get free information about college and test taking strategies from The Princeton Review.

The cost is $10, which benefits the Newport Beach Youth Council. Participating students need to enroll and should bring a calculator and two No. 2 pencils to the test.

School Transfer Opportunity

Newport-Mesa Unified allows Parent School Choice Transfers.  The parent or guardian of any school-age resident student may request a school to transfer their student to another school. They must be online at the Newport-Mesa Unified School District web site, www.nmusd.us/transfers. There will be a lottery to rank the applications in priority order.  Parents will be notified regarding the status of their Parent School Choice Transfer request application by e-mail or in writing beginning on May 15, 2011. 

Grandparents Rule

Newport Harbor High School will hold its annual Grandparents Day on Feb. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  After lunch served in the small gym from 11 a.m. to noon, everyone will be moving in to the theater from noon to 1 p.m. and then on to the library reading room from 1 to 1:30 p.m. to view the art collection.
