N-MUSD: No Tdap, No School

Don't forget! The deadline for students' whooping cough booster vaccinations was extended until Oct. 7.

In order to make sure students comply with a new state law requiring students in grades seven through 12 to receive a whooping cough booster shot, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District is giving vaccinations this week.

The Tdap shot clinic will be held today and tomorrow, from 4-6 p.m. at the N-MUSD Hope Clinic, 2045 Meyer Place, Bldg. C, Costa Mesa. Students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and must have their immunization records.

As of Wednesday, there were 118 students throughout the district who were yet to show proof of the Tdap booster. "Using a student population of 10,200 that brings us to 99 percent compliant," said Laura Boss, district spokeswoman.

The new law required all incoming seventh- through 12th-graders to receive a whooping cough booster shot before school started Sept. 6, but the deadline was extended until Friday, Oct. 7. District officials say students will not be allowed to attend their classes as of Friday if they have not provided their school with proof of a Tdap shot or have completed a waiver.

Proof of the Tdap booster shot must include the student’s name, date of birth, vaccine name, date the vaccine was administered, and name of the clinic, office or doctor administering the vaccine.
