Photos: 'Every 15 Minutes' Stirs Emotions at Newport Harbor High School

The Every 15 Minutes program Tuesday at Newport Harbor High School encouraged students to stay away from drinking and driving.

The real life consequences of drinking and driving were brought to life this week at Newport Harbor Harbor High School. As part of the annual Every 15 Minutes Program, two presentations were held at Newport Harbor on Monday and Tuesday to warn students about the dangers of alcohol. Monday's presentation consisted of a simulated DUI traffic crash that included police and fire officials, and a coroner. Tuesday's continuation of the program provided students with a video presentation of the collision, and everything that occurred in the aftermath including footage from the hospital, coroner, jail and court hearing. After the video presentation, student volunteers read letters to their parents expressing remorse for their mock actions involving drinking and driving. Student Talalelei Teaupa was so overcome with emotion, that he was unable to read his letter. Desiree Garcia, a MADD representative, told the students how a underage drunk driver killed her mother on July 8, 2008."My life is forever changed as a result of one person's bad decision," Garcia said. "I have been angry for the last eight years because of someone's selfishness that decided that my mom's life was worth two shots of vodka."
