Parking Limits OK'd Near High School

Corona del Mar High School students won't be able to park on Aralia Street for much longer, as the Newport Beach City Council has given the green light to new parking restrictions in the area.

Residents in the neighborhood have complained for years about the lack of parking in front of their homes because of students parking there, and leaving trash on their curbs. At its Tuesday night meeting, the City Council voted 6-0 to approve a one-hour parking permit zone on Aralia Street, from Aleppo Street to the end of the cul-de-sac, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days, and issue parking permits to residents.

Councilwoman Leslie Daigle recused herself from the vote because she owns property in the area.

Under the new ordinance, Aralia Street residents are allowed up to three parking permits, according to a staff report, with guests, contractors, service workers and students limited to one hour permitted parking. The parking permits will cost residents $16 per year.

Staff will be working to install signs on Aralia Street to notify students, parents and residents about the new parking restrictions which go into effect in 30 days.
