UPDATE: Seismic Upgrades to Goldenrod Footbridge Near Completion

The city estimates about three more weeks of work on the historic bridge.

The Goldenrod Footbridge in Corona del Mar has been undergoing seismic retrofitting since the beginning of the year. The work is expected to be completed by next month and will ensure its ability to withstand a substantial earthquake, officials say.

The bridge was built in August 1928 and is safe for use; however the upgrades are expected to keep the bridge from collapsing. Dave Webb, the city's deputy public works director/city engineer, said the seismic work  includes retrofitting the fixed and expansion bents, retrofitting the abutments and wrapping the columns in steel casings.

"We estimate three more weeks of work, although the construction left is not very disruptive or complex," Webb said. "They need to replace the steel collars around the base of the supporting braces.  The collars are out being painted currently, and when they return, will be fitted on the supports and concrete poured around them."
