CERT Disaster Training to be Held Saturday

More than 900 residents have been certified through the program to assist the city during an emergency.

The Newport Beach Fire Department is planning a refresher course for graduates of its Community Emergency Response Team.

The Drill the Skills event will be held Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Santa Ana Heights Fire Station and more than 100 participants are scheduled to attend. The event is held twice a year and is a chance for new CERT graduates and active members to refresh their skills and renew their certifications.

The CERT program is designed to teach community members how to help family and neighbors during an emergency and after a disaster. At this weekend's drill, CERT volunteers will be divided into six neighborhood teams and will participate in outdoor search and rescue, indoor search and rescue, fires suppression, disaster medical operations, ID badge and disaster medical operations review.
