Former OC Official Arrested on Sex Counts

Carlos Bustamante, who still serves as a Santa Ana City Councilman, is accused of multiple counts, including stalking and sexual battery. In October, he resigned from the OC Public Works Department amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Santa Ana City Councilman Carlos Bustamante was arrested Monday on multiple sex charges, according to the Orange County district attorney's office.

Bustamante was arrested at 4:30 p.m. on six felony counts of false imprisonment, three felony counts of assault with the intent to commit a sexual offense and one felony count each of stalking, attempted sexual battery by restraint and grand theft by false pretense, according to prosecutors. He also faces one misdemeanor count each of battery, assault, sexual battery and attempted sexual battery.

The charges include sentencing enhancements of committing the offenses
as a result of sexual compulsion and for the purpose of sexual gratification.

District Attorney Tony Rackauckas was scheduled to release details of the arrest during a news conference Tuesday morning. No further details will be released before then, prosecutors said.

Bustamante resigned in October as executive manager with the Orange
County Public Works Department following allegations of sexual misconduct with co-workers. The resignation came after anonymous letters were sent to the Orange County Register making allegations against Bustamante.
