Rush Hill Named Newport Beach Mayor

Rush Hill takes the mayor's seat in Newport Beach, while Councilman Ed Selich moves into the Mayor Pro Tem spot.

Members of the Newport Beach City Council shifted seats at its Tuesday night meeting as Mayor Pro Tem Rush Hill was named the city's 45th mayor.

Members of the City Council voted unanimously to elect Hill as mayor for 2014-2015. Hill takes the mayor's seat and gavel from Councilman Keith Curry, who served as the city's mayor for the last year. Councilman Ed Selich was elected mayor pro tem.

"This is a truly wonderful place to live. Yet there is always rooms to improve. I learned a long time ago that remaining level, being satisfied with the status quo, is not a choice," Hill said. "The rest of the world passes you by. You must always strive to be better. And that is what we will do while I am Mayor."

Hill said he will be focusing on continuing to improve a variety of areas in Newport Beach during his term as mayor, including keeping the bay and ocean waters clean and visitor friendly, providing parks and having a special place for senior citizens and tackling issues with John Wayne Airport which is the "largest threat to the quality of life and property values."

Hill presented Curry with a plaque to thank him for his service as mayor of Newport Beach. Curry accepted and said being mayor of Newport Beach was, "the greatest job in the world."

Hill was elected to the Newport Beach City Council in 2010.
