Newport Beach Mayor Nancy Gardner received an award Monday from Balboa Peninsula's ABC Surf and the National Surf Schools and Instructors Association for a sport she has grown to love.

The paddleboarding group presented Gardner with a certificate for being the first mayor, the group is aware of, to stand-up paddleboard while in office.

"It's always fun to be first," Gardner told Patch.
