Newport Rolling Out New Trash Carts

Residential trash collection will soon be handled by CR&R Environmental Services, which will provide automated service that requires the use of trash carts, instead of trash cans.

Residential trash collection will soon be handled by a new company in Newport Beach, and city officials are asking residents to place their order for new trash carts.

Beginning on March 31, CR&R Environmental Services will start providing trash collection service in Newport Beach, which will include automated or semi-automated service that requires the use of trash carts instead of cans, city officials said in a news release. Starting today customers will receive a form in the mail from CR&R that will provide more information on how to order the carts. The City Council voted in September to outsource trash collection in an effort to save the city millions of dollars.

Residents can order as many trash and recycling carts as they may need for free. Orders must be received by Jan. 20. The carts vary in sizes from 35, 64 or 96 gallons. CR&R will collect and recycle the old, unwanted trash cans the week following the delivery of the new carts. Separating recyclables in a separate cart is an option, not a requirement. All trash will continue to be sorted at a materials recovery facility where recyclables are removed.

City staff will be out in the community this weekend with cart samples at the following locations:

  • Saturday, Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Corona del Mar Farmer’s Market (Coast Highway & Marguerite)
  • Saturday, Jan. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. Balboa Island / Fire Station 4 - 124 Marine Ave. Corona del Mar; Community Youth Center - 3000 Fifth Ave.; Buffalo Hills Park - 1901 Port Provence Pl.; East Bluff Park - 2555 Vista del Oro
Residents that are homebound or are unable to visit any of the sample cart locations can call 949-644-3030 to schedule an appointment for a city staff member to visit the customer’s home with the cart samples.

Customers with questions about ordering their carts should call CR&R at 1-866-949-9694. More information about the new trash carts can be found at
