Newport Police Arrest 5 Under Tougher Trash Picking Restrictions

Alleged illegal scavengers lived outside the city.

Newport Beach police this year have arrested five people for allegedly scavenging recyclables and other items from trash containers in the city, according to the Police Department.

The City Council in January unanimously approved tougher restrictions on scavengers and trash pickers.

All of the people arrested lived outside of Newport; four had been arrested in the past for offenses ranging from drunk in public to lewd conduct, and three had active warrants for criminal violations, according to a press release.
