Newport Council OKs Action Against Marijuana Dispensaries

The City Council authorizes "nuisance abatement" against three local pot outlets.

The City Council, it appears, has decided to take some sort of action against three marijuana dispensaries in the Newport Beach.

An item regarding "potential initiation of litigation involving the illegal sale of marijuana" was on the council's closed session agenda for Tuesday. The agenda item listed three local medical pot dispensaries and collectives:

Following closed session, the city clerk reported that the council had authorized "nuisance abatement." After the meeting, city spokeswoman Tara Finnigan wrote in an email that the target of the nuisance abatement was three entities whose locations were listed on the City Council agenda. She declined further comment.

California voters gave the OK to medical marijuana in 1996. Since then, many cities have sought to keep dispensaries outside of their borders.

Dispensaries are prohibited under Newport's zoning and municipal codes, Finnigan said in a earlier exchange.
