Update: Newport Power Outage Knocks Out Power to Thousands

Outage started around 11 a.m. following an equipment failure. More than 2,000 Southern California Edison customers were affected.

A power outage today knocked out power to nearly 2,300 Newport Beach customers and multiple traffic signals along East Coast Highway, police said.

The outage started just after 11 a.m., with power restored to all but 68 customers in Corona Del Mar as of about 1:45 p.m., Southern California Edison spokesman Paul Klein said. Those customers should have their electricity restored by 3 a.m. tomorrow, he said. The outage, which at its peak affected 2,276 Edison customers, was due to the failure of some underground equipment, Klein said.

Newport Beach police were directing traffic this afternoon because the outage knocked out traffic lights along the highway from Jamboree Road to Marguerite Avenue, said Kathy Lowe, a spokeswoman for the police department.
