Newport Beach Officials Turn Out for Shelter Ribbon Cutting

The Orange County Humane Society has been providing shelter services to Newport since May.

Officials gathered on Saturday—a chorus of barking dogs in the background—to celebrate a new agreement for the Orange County Humane Society to provide shelter services for animals found in Newport Beach.

To mark the occasion, Newport Mayor Mike Henn cut a ribbon at the Human Society, which is located in Huntington Beach. The Humane Society has been providing shelter services, including spaying, neutering and pet adoption, for Newport since May.

“This has been a nice choice for shelter services,” City Manager Dave Kiff said. “They really emphasize adoption and trying to get as many pets to a good home as possible.”

Kiff, who has two adopted dogs, said he wished he could take more animals home from the shelter.

“I would adopt ten if I could,” he said.

The City Council approved a contract with the Human Society in April, switching from Dover Shores Pet Care Center in Costa Mesa.

Council members selected the new contract after the center’s owner announced he planned to raise fees, according to a city staff report.

The Humane Society's contract is for $94,000 for two years and gives the city the option to renew the contract for a three-year term at the end of the two-year period.

Shelter volunteer Corrine Para said she’s “thrilled” that the Society is taking over the Newport's shelter services.

“I live in Newport Beach, so I’m happy to know where the animals will be going,” Para said.
