Newport Needs Your Help to Win Water Challenge

Newport Beach is well on its way to winning a national title for being the most water wise city in the nation. Today residents are being urged to donate a minute of their time to help push Newport to the top of the challenge.

Newport Beach Mayor Nancy Gardner went head to head last month with the mayor of Laguna Beach to join the National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, which runs through Monday, April 30. Only six days away from the conclusion of the online competition, Newport Beach currently No. 2 for most water wise city in the country, just who is in first place, for the participating western region cities with populations between 30,000 and 100,000.

“We have an excellent record in water quality and water conservation, and I’m glad to see it reflected in the results,” Gardner said. “I ask again that all residents go to the web site and fill out the questionnaire which takes less than a minute. By doing this they help us garner the recognition for our efforts as a city and also raise awareness about the importance of water issues."

To participate in the competition and help support Newport’s water-wise success, you can make your pledge at www.mywaterpledge.com by taking a quick, three question survey. Newport resident MarieSarah Pillari was excited to help her city by participating in the online pledge.

“I am always water-conscious,” Pillari said. “I keep the faucet off while I brush my teeth, wash my dishes by hand and not with the dishwasher and I let the rain wash my car for me!”

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act, cities from across the nation are participating in the online competition to see which city can conserve the most water and reduce local water pollution. Participants are also eligible to win a Toyota Prius, Lowe’s Home Improvement gift cards, and eco-friendly water fixtures such as the Rain Bird sprinkler system, EcoFlow showerheads from Waterpik and Sterling water-saving toilets.
