Newport Beach Ends Contract with Ex-City Attorney Following DUI Arrest

City Attorney Aaron Harp says the termination date will be Oct. 11.

The city of Newport Beach has decided to sever ties with former city attorney David Hunt, four days after he was , a city official confirmed Tuesday.

Hunt, 54, of Santa Ana, was arrested over the weekend on suspicion of drunk driving after running into a parked car. Last week the Newport Beach City Council voted 6-1 to rehire Hunt as an outside contractor, entering into an agreement with his new law firm less than one month .

"The City Attorney’s Office has decided to terminate the agreement with Friedman, Stroffe & Gerard, P.C.," said Tara Finnigan, city spokeswoman. "A letter terminating the agreement will be sent to Hunt's firm today."

City Attorney Aaron Harp said under the agreeement, the city is required to give the firm a seven day notice, therefore the termination will go into effect on Oct. 11.

"We have not assigned any work to this firm and will not assign any work prior to the termination date," Harp said.
