Nancy Gardner Becomes Mayor

The Newport Beach City Council unanimously selects her.

Nancy Gardner was unanimously elected as mayor of Newport Beach Tuesday.

Gardner, 69, is an Orange County native who was born in Newport Beach and raised in Corona del Mar. Gardner was elected to the Newport Beach City Council in 2006 and has since represented Corona del Mar and Newport Coast on the Newport Beach City Council. She stresses environmental issues and working to give residents a better quality of life. At Tuesday night's Newport Beach City Council meeting, Gardner thanked outgoing Mayor Mike Henn for his year of leadership and service and said he would be a tough act to follow.

"I've watched, as mayor pro tem, the energy and dedication you brought to this role," Gardner said. "I can only hope to be a shadow of your wonderful accomplishments."

After graduating from Newport Harbor High School, Gardner received a bachelor's degree from USC and a master's degree from the UC Irvine.

Councilman Keith Curry was also unanimously elected as mayor pro tem at the meeting.
