Issa Calls for Akin to Step Down After Deadline Passes

Republicans urged Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin to step down after he made controversial comments regarding abortions for rape victims.

Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Vista) wants the embattled Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin to end his senate race after he made controversial comments about abortion and rape.

The message, however, was posted after Akin let a deadline pass that would have made his exit from the campaign nearly seamless.

Akin caused a stir Sunday when he told an interviewer that that he opposes abortions for rape victims and that those cases are rare.

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” he said.

Republicans urged him to step down.

Akin could have pulled out of the race without a court order if he had done it before 5 p.m. in the Central Time Zone Tuesday, CNN reports. Akin allowed the deadline to slip, and, in addition to the court order, his campaign would have to pay for reprinting of ballots if he chooses to drop out.

Hours after the deadline passed, Issa linked to a CBS News story in which Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also called for Akin to exit the race.

Issa attached a statement to the link:

“Todd Akin’s statement was wrong and totally inappropriate and he continues to make attempts to defend it. Rep. Akin’s comments do not represent the views of any other Republican I know. He should immediately resign his campaign for U.S. Senate.”

for the 49th Congressional District seat.

Editor's note: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Issa wanted Akin to step down. Issa called for Akin to end his race for senate. It has since been corrected.

Just so everyone knows, I want to punch Todd Akin in the face. A LOT. And then just one more time after that. He's a DISGRACE and an absolute JACKWAGON for not stepping down. He's a selfish wackjob who only cares about HIMSELF, and I'm truly embarrassed that he calls himself a Republican. I feel better now.

You should be embarrassed to call yourself a Republican. Aahaha

"Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Vista) wants the embattled Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin to step down after he made controversial comments about abortion and rape." This is misleading. Issa is not calling for Akin to step down. He is simply asking him to withdraw from the Senate race. Asking him to step down would be what was done with Weiner, for one of those sex scandals that did not involve any actual sex. Resigning from the House of Representatives. So what Issa and those others asking Akin to step down are really saying is that it was despicable what he said, and unbecoming of someone aspiring to be a US Senator from the "Show me" state of Missouri, but totally kosher if he is already a US House of Representative. Someday we will have a not totally inept media asking at least these questions instead of just being stenographers. "Rep. Akin’s comments do not represent the views of any other Republican I know. He should immediately resign his campaign for U.S. Senate.” Mr. Issa either has selective memory, or does not know many Republicans. Also, too, indeed, libruls did it first. Clinton, Biden, chains, bondage....

If a child is produced as the result of a "legitimate rape" is that a "legitimate" or "illegitimate" child ? Can an "illegitimate" child be a victim of "legitimate rape" ? The only thing that even approaches the stupidity of these divinely delusional self-righteous simpletons is their insincere & insufferable piosity ! How could any woman vote for any candidate endorsed by the extreme bible-based bigots of the GOP ?
