Council Welcomes New City Sculpture

Inspired by seaweed at Little Corona Beach, artist Sarah A. Wilkinson's "Uprooted II" will be on display at the new Civic Center for at least one year.

It was on display on a beach in Sydney, Australia, now a large kelp sculpture will have a temporary home in Newport Beach.

At its Tuesday night meeting, the City Council voted unanimously to lease the "Uprooted II," sculpture from Corona del Mar resident Sarah A. Wilkinson. The one year lease will cost the city $750, which could be used at a later date to buy it for $25,000.

The sculpture, made out of stainless steel and bronze, stands 7 feet tall and weighs 135 pounds.

"Sarah was inspired by seaweed she saw while walking on Little Corona Beach,"  Carole Boller, a city arts commissioner, told the City Council during a presentation. "The sculpture exemplifies the relationship the community has with living near the sea."

Several locations at the new Civic Center were proposed to the City Council, but a final decision on where it will be installed was not made at the meeting.
