Contract for Restroom Cleaning to Save Newport Beach $140,000

Three city positions will be eliminated as a result of the new maintenance contract.

Outsourcing some of Newport Beach's dirty work will save the city more than $140,000 a year, according to a city staff report.

ABM Janitorial Services will soon take over cleaning 26 public restrooms in Newport. The City Council approved the $181,256 contract with ABM on Tuesday.

Public restrooms in the city have been maintained by a patchwork of city employees and three contractors at a cost of $324,000 a year, according to the staff report. Three city maintenance worker positions are being eliminated as a result of the new contract, the report said.

Annual savings under the new arrangement will be about $143,000, the report said.

In May, the city solicited for bids restroom cleaning. ABM's bid was the lowest of the seven firms that replied. Bids ranged from $181,256 to $594,048.

City officials have said they will consider contracting out for more services as they look for ways to further reduce city spending.
