The Newport Beach Parks, Beaches & Recreation Commission was expected to vote on the removal of a eucalyptus tree in Corona del Mar last week, but the decision was postponed.
At its Tuesday meeting, commissioners voted to continue the vote on the eucalyptus tree located at 621 Poppy Ave. until a meeting next month. Commissioners wanted to give a resident who could not attend the meeting a chance to weigh in on the eucalyptus. Staff recommended commissioners consider removing the tree after a resident requested its removal, plus the removal of one at 619 Poppy Ave., after a eucalyptus at 721 Poppy Ave. failed.
According to a staff report, the removal of the 619 Poppy eucalyptus is "not justified at this time," but staff said the one at 621 Poppy must be removed as it's a "potential liability."
Staff said the eucalyptus has severe root loss, a declining canopy and an increased chance of failure.
