Coastal Commission Gives Up Battle Over Pedestrian Bridge

A small bridge that leads to Bay Island will remain exclusive, according to a decision Wednesday by the California Coastal Commission.

The California Coastal Commission had hoped to provide the public with access to a bridge that leads to the exclusive Bay Island in Newport Beach, but this week state officials decided to keep it private, the Orange County Register reported.

Bay Island houses 23 waterfront homes, a caretaker residence and does not have any roads. The bridge is the only way to get on and off the island. A judgment last month by a Court of Appeal ruled the bridge was not to be opened for public access.

The commission was planning to take the issue to the state Supreme Court since the bridge crosses a public waterway.
