PHOTOS: New City Hall Progress

The new City Hall, park and more should be finished by the end of this year. Estimated cost: $106 to $140 million.

Work on the is well underway with completion expected in late 2012.

The construction project borders MacArthur Boulevard and Avocado Avenue, occupying two large parcels of land. The Civic Center and Park Project is slated to include a new city hall building, a 450-space parking structure, a 16-acre park with a designated dog park and a 17,000-square-foot expansion of the Newport Beach's Central Library.

The library will include a sound and video room, a credit union, children's reading room and a cafe. The park will boast nature trails, and a lawn to host art and outdoor events. Besides accommodating the city offices, the city hall building will include a new community room, an emergency readiness center and dual purpose council chambers to also be used for community meetings.

The new Civic Center is designed as an environmentally friendly building, constructed to at least a Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

It will include passive heating and cooling systems, California-friendly landscaping in the main portion of the park, and facilities designed to increase the number of city workers who carpool, bike to work, or use alternative-fuel vehicles.
